Blurred understanding about Bangkok condition and the access of Phuket pulled out 15 teams from FIVB Beach Volleyball Swatch World Tour. This world competition starts on Karon Beach tomorrow. However the tournament director Geoffrey Rowe of Pentangle Promotions today explained if the canceled teams were only qualified in qualification round.
The cancelations giving no effect on 32 major teams which competed in this world-class event, said him. “The problem is foreign people do not understand if Bangkok has two airports. When the news noticed Don Mueang Airport was closed, people sent emails to ask how they can get to Phuket if Bangkok airport closed,” said him. “While we can convince some teams to come, other teams cancelled their participation due to their concern. TV report showed Thailand pictures in drowning situation and the teams were worried.”
“The major 32 teams are still coming to compete though we lost some teams. The main draw is only 32 teams so it is only cutting the qualification round. We started with 70 teams and 15 teams cancelled so we have only one day for qualification,” said him. Qualification will start tomorrow with first country group at 2 PM. Amongst 55 teams from 27 countries are current number one ranked team, Julie Silva and Larissa Franca from Brazil who are determined to make Phuket tournament their 7th achievement this year.
Following this tournament, April Ross and Jen Kessy (ranked 5 in the world) from US will grab Phuket event for their third time. Other team is Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti (ranked 7 in the world) are looking for Italian victory. Winners of 2006 event, Xue Chen and Zhang Xi (ranked 3 in the world) from China will perform their best in this event. These couples will make further six days competition highly interesting for beach volleyball lovers. Jump on Karon Beach for Phuket Thailand Open on Tuesday and for the final round on Sunday.
