February 10th, 2012 · No Comments · Environment and Ecology

Phuket fishermen caught 5 kg fish as it was categorized into extraordinary catching. The unusual fish is large longtailed tuna while it caught in the Phuket southern waters, said the expert. The big fish then brought to Andaman Sea Fisheries Management Center Krabi on Tuesday. The director center Jaroen Omane said it is a good sign for the fishermen in the Krabi coast.

Longtailed tuna usually live in deep water as it is popular for fishing sport. It is not easy to find in shallow water like one in the Krabi coast, said Mr Jaroen. Krabi fishermen said it might be these fish migration to the area where they could easily find foods. “It means we should expand non-fishing area from 3,000 meters into 5,400 meters during the spawning season. The success of fishermen to catch 5-6 kilograms longtailed tuna means marine environment going improved. It is not explained why the fish migrated so close,” said Mr Jaroen.

“It is fitted for sushi,” said him. In these ten years fishermen had caught longtailed tuna but they were smaller as they were only three to four kilograms, said Mr Jaroen. Phuket has been a long time accommodated third largest tuna species in Asia while it has attracted Taiwanese investor to grow local industry. Most of the catch sent to US and Japan.
